Halloween has become a popular holiday where some entertainments are featured such as costume parties and parades. On Halloween, it was believed that ghosts come back that’s why people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they leave their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they leave their homes at nighttime so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits.

Halloween is an event that is celebrated each year on October 31. It originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain (pronounced 'sow'inn') is a very important date in the Pagan calendar for it marks the Feast of the Dead. Many Pagans also celebrate it as the old Celtic New Year (although some mark this at Imbolc). It is also celebrated by non-Pagans who call this festival Halloween.

People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as the day to honor all saints; All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later on was called Halloween. As time passes by, Halloween was celebrated through activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, wearing costumes and eating sweet treats. 

On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to shoo the ghosts away and prevent them from attempting to enter. Halloween has always been a holiday filled with mystery, magic and superstition. It began as an end-of-summer festival which people visit deceased relatives and friends. People would prepare dinner tables at certain  places, leave treats on doorsteps and along the side of the road and light candles to help loved ones find their way back to the spirit world.

People would avoid black cats because of the belief that witches turn themselves into black cats. Black cats are being considered as bad luck. This idea came from the Middle Ages.
